Bath Street House
RECLAD

This house, occupying an impressive section at the northern end of Cheltenham beach, was originally a Californian bungalow constructed in the 1920s. In the 1990s, it had been given a Miami Vice-style makeover and clad in an EIFS plaster system.

I was engaged in 2010 by the new owners to reclad and modernise the house.

It was an interesting project. The house was redesigned to look essentially like a modern house, although a few bungalow-style features were added, providing a connection to the original house.

The entire upper storey became an open-plan living area overlooking the beach. On the beach-facing side of the house, we converted the flat ceiling to a pitched ceiling, with gable end windows that provide light and ventilation.

We added a new skillion roof with eaves and reclad the two lower storeys in bevel-back timber weatherboards. The upper storey was clad in Eurotray to match the roof, minimising maintenance on this level of the house as it was quite difficult to reach.
